Care & installation

Contract wallcoverings demand precision at every stage of their lifecycle. Their durability is not inherent; it is the result of exacting preparation, installation, and maintenance. This guide cuts through ambiguity. It outlines the non-negotiable steps required to ensure these materials perform as intended, without deviation or compromise.

Substrate Preparation

Surface integrity is the first line of defense. Any existing material—paint, plaster, or prior coverings—must be completely removed. The wall must be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or residue. If the surface is porous, apply a primer that matches the wallcovering’s adhesive requirements. Unevenness or damage must be repaired before proceeding. Substrate failure is the sole cause of premature detachment.

Paste Type and Application

Use only the adhesive specified by the manufacturer. Water-based pastes are suitable for most interiors, while solvent-based variants are reserved for high-traffic or industrial environments. Apply paste evenly to the back of the wallcovering, avoiding excess that could pool or leave visible ridges. The paste must bond directly to the wall, not to the paper or fabric backing. Incorrect adhesive use invalidates warranty and voids performance guarantees.

Seam Handling

Seams are the weakest points in any installation. Align them precisely, ensuring they are not offset or warped. Use seam tape or a compatible filler to smooth transitions, avoiding visible gaps or ridges. Overlap seams by no more than 1/4 inch to prevent buckling. Do not stretch the material; it must adhere to the wall’s natural contours. Misaligned seams are irreversible and will degrade the surface over time.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean surfaces with a damp cloth and mild, pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid abrasive sponges, solvents, or steam. Wipe in a single direction to prevent streaks or residue. For stubborn stains, use a solution of water and a small amount of dish soap, applied sparingly. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately. Never allow moisture to linger. Regular maintenance prevents buildup that could lift the covering.

Light Exposure

Direct sunlight accelerates fading and weakens adhesives. Install UV-filtering films or use window treatments to block harmful rays. Rotate or reposition coverings if exposure is unavoidable. Avoid placing them near heat sources, which can warp the material. Light exposure is cumulative; even minimal exposure over time will compromise longevity.

Expected Lifespan

Contract wallcoverings are engineered for longevity, typically lasting between 5 and 15 years depending on environment and use. High-traffic areas may require replacement sooner, while controlled environments can extend this range. Lifespan is not a fixed number—it is determined by adherence to installation and care protocols. Neglect or improper use reduces this span to a fraction of its potential.
